River Stand Up Paddleboarding Membership Package

Overview

Our River Stand Up Paddleboarding Membership gives you up to two years to master SUP river running and surfing at your own pace. Jason Kopp (pictured) is our River SUP Director. Jason's patience and smooth paddling style on the river is matched only by his calm demeanor and effective teaching style, in addition to his 100% pure stoke for the sport!

Each of the four courses serve as a building block for the next. Go as fast as you want over a two-year period, and paddle as much as possible between courses. (Our software lets you customize your own schedule online.) Please review the individual course descriptions below.


RIVERSUP 101-104 Course and Practice Descriptions

RIVERSUP 101: FUNdamentals

This fun three-hour lesson on flat water will ensure you have the proper paddling technique and river knowledge before you embark on your first whitewater adventure. This course includes a few fun facts about the history of the sport, terminology, and a thorough orientation to the primary pieces of whitewater equipment: helmet, pfd, board, fins, paddle, foot protection, and leash. We will use an obstacle course to practice advanced SUP techniques that you will use to maneuver in whitewater. At the end of this class, you'll definitely be able to feel your river board carve!

RIVERSUP 102: Moving Water

Moving Water: Here is where the fun really begins! In this challenging three-hour course you'll learn how to self rescue in moving water and how to safely and effectively navigate class I rapids. You'll also practice techniques to paddle through current, harnessing the power of the river to stay upright on your board. After three hours you will begin to build the muscle memory that will help you perform each maneuver like a pro.

RIVERSUP 103: River Running

River Running: Test your new river skills as you spend three hours running and playing in class I-II rapids on the Potomac. You'll be stoked beyond belief! Fundamental whitewater maneuvers are refined and more advanced maneuvers are introduced, including submerged tail-eddy turns and heel-side peel outs. You will learn river communication and scouting skills and strategies, and you'll begin to understand how to read water and pick good lines through a rapid.

RIVERSUP 104: River Surfing

It's no secret that surfing a wave is a magical, breathtaking experience that connects the surfer to the water like nothing else in nature. It is less known, however, that you can catch and surf river waves on a SUP! This four-hour course will teach you to utilize all of your newly acquired RiverSUP skills to identify, access, and surf river waves. You will learn wave anatomy, master the jet ferry technique for entering a wave, and practice river surfing technique during this fun-filled lesson on the Potomac.
