Beginner Sea Kayak Starter Package

Overview

Whether you're new to paddling or have been at it for a while, our Starter Package will expose you to the bare minimum that touring and recreational kayakers need to know to be safe: proper equipment fit, core muscle use, how to handle a capsize and how to assist in a rescue.

Here's exactly what you'll get when you sign up for the Starter Lesson Package:

  1. SK 101: Fundamentals
  2. SK 102: Safety
  3. Kayak, paddle, pfd, spray skirt provided for each lesson

The two courses are coached by our mature, professional team of instructors who will speed up the learning process by providing tailored feedback and hands-on teaching. Touring and recreational kayakers who are paddling without the skills taught in this package are taking risks every time they launch. This efficient package of classes eliminates that risk, boosts confidence and allows paddlers to push the limits of their kayaking for maximum exploration and enjoyment. Get more out of the journey and be ready for the "what if" scenario! You may upgrade to the Sea Kayak Membership Package after completion the two courses.

Launching and landing can be done gracefully, if you know a few tricks. Torso rotation relieves the arms and shoulders of strain. Turning and propelling strokes can be mastered through professional coaching. This four-hour lesson is taught in a quiet cove and all equipment is provided. Select one date from the list above.

SK 102: Safety

Safety is your top priority. The Safety lesson prepares you for the unexpected and builds confidence. Staying in a capsized sea kayak for a few seconds can save time and energy, provided your partner's kayak is close enough to offer you a lift back to the surface. When you do have to exit the kayak, getting out of the water and back in your boat while away from shore requires assisted re-entry or, when solo, use of a paddle float and bilge pump. Learn all of these valuable skills--plus towing techniques--in calm water near shore. Equipment is provided, but please bring your own paddle float, bilge pump, tow system, and knife.
