Attaining & River Running Membership Package

Overview

Ready to take the next step in your whitewater kayaking career? Break into the world of intermediate downriver boating with our Attaining & River Running Package! Anyone can float downriver, now's the time to learn how to read the rapids, choose the best line, and really nail those boofs! Attaining workouts do wonders for river-running skills and build muscle in all the right places. We place a strong emphasis on whitewater safety and rescue skills, making you even more self-sufficient and you'll get practice taking a leadership role among your peers on the river. Prerequisites: Completion of our Beginner Whitewater Membership Package or similar skills and abilities. Also, students must provide their own river running equipment.

Attaining & River Running Course Descriptions

Attaining

This three hour course will leave you exhausted, but ready to hit the water again as soon as you can catch your breath! We will work our way up river starting at the Anglers put-in, and show you how to select the best routes up river based on that particular level. We'll test our fitness and skill on a variety of attaining moves along the way and we'll work towards perfecting the necessary skills for successful attaining such as the stern draw, edge control, and a solid forward stroke. This course is part instruction and part workout!

Advanced River Running

How's that boof stroke? Does catching micro-eddies sound like a fun challenge? This four-hour course is designed to bring your river running skills and abilities to the next level! We will work on boat control in moving water - keeping your strokes strong and efficient, smart edging, reading the water, and responding to it quickly and accurately. Remember, it's called paddling, not rolling - learn how to stay upright to enjoy the ride!

Whitewater Rescue

Practical whitewater safety and rescue skills are a must! Our five-hour Whitewater Rescue class is unlike typical swiftwater rescue courses. While you won't learn the Z-drag or how to unpin a canoe, you will learn how to apply your paddling skills (and common sense) in the most common rescue scenarios: swimming a rapid, towing a swimmer, deploying throw ropes, collecting gear from a rapid, and working in teams to manage multiple swimmers. We'll also discuss proper cold-weather paddling apparel.

Trip Leading

You retain 90% of what you learn when you teach someone else. In this four hour course, you will play the roll of instructor, leading a group of Beginner Whitewater Kayak Students down the Mather Gorge for their graduation leson. Trained, expert Potomac Paddlesports instructors will be there the whole way down to support and instruct. A perfect course if you ever plan on showing others down a river. It is one challenge to get yourself down a river, it is a whole different challenge when you are showing others for the first time!
