The demanding nature of sea kayaking in the UK has helped to develop a high-level kayak coaching program. Potomac Paddlesports is pleased to offer The British Canoe Union's (BCU) Star Award system to qualified students. Whether you just want to refine your skills, or become a coach, our "BCU Assessment Package" is the perfect way to take your kayaking skills to the next level AND receive a internationally recognized skill rating in the process. Please come prepared by completing the prerequisite Potomac Paddlesports' lessons as outlined below. All Potomac Paddlesports' BCU training and assessments are coached by BCU Coach Level 3, A1* Tom Nickels. BCU Training and Assessment Package (Includes all below.)Our BCU Assessment Package offers 2-4 Star Training and the potential for up to 3 Star assessment. When you sign up for the package, you are also eligible to attend our Tuesday evening BCU Practice Clinics for free. You have two years to complete our BCU Assessment Package. All BCU fees are included in the price. Please read each level description below. (Note: Levels are also offered individually but do not include weekly clinics.)
BCU Practice NightsIf you are a student of one of our sea kayak lesson packages, you know the value of our weekly practice clinics. We are reserving Tuesday evening sessions specifically for students in our BCU Assessment Package. Demo kayaks from Valley, P&H, Impex, and other brands are available during the Practice Nights at no additional charge.
BCU 2 Star Training and AssessmentThe BCU 2 Star is a flat-water based evaluation where individuals must reflect basic boat control, fundamental strokes, and rescues in a canoe or kayak. This module includes one 5 hour training and one 3 hour assessment (to be completed on separate dates.) Successful completion of the assessment portion of this module awards a BCU 2 Star rating.
BCU 3 Star Training and AssessmentThe BCU 3 Star Sea Kayak Award is an environment specific award where individuals must reflect the capacity to journey in a sheltered sea environment as part of a group. This module includes one 6 hour training and one 6 hour assessment (to be completed on seperate dates.) Successful completion of the assessment portion of this module awards a BCU 3 Star rating.
BCU 4 Star TrainingThe BCU 4 Star Award comprises distinct training whereby individuals will demonstrate the ability to lead a group of four paddlers on short journeys up to moderate tidal water environment with winds not exceeding force 4. This module includes one 6 hour training session.
