Teen Whitewater Day Camp
Potomac Paddlesports' whitewater kayaking day-camp for boys and girls ages 12-17 pairs your child up with our top professional whitewater instructors in a challenging environment that will boost their confidence and teach them to respect their natural surroundings and each other. In addition to learning whitewater safety and paddling skills, our "River Patrollers" learn outdoor leadership, digital photography and film editing. We also teach them to roll up their sleeves and get involved in river conservation. Patrollers also get to blog their experiences to share with friends and family online. Whitewater training starts in calm water and progresses up to class II-III whitewater. Click here to see our beautiful "classroom": LINK
Level 1: Fundamentals
Beginner kayakers should register for Level 1 to learn the importance of the fundamentals: equipment fit, rolling, strokes, and river maneuvers. Each day serves as a building block for the next with a strong emphasis on safety awareness. Daily workouts will develop skills quickly. Once patrollers show a moderate degree of proficiency and comfort, we'll be paddling in class II-III whitewater and learn to surf standing waves. Level 1 also teaches documentary skills with the use of video and still cameras. Each Patroller will keep a logbook of their experiences and the group will post updates to their own internet blog.

Level 2: Wave Surfing & Playboating
Level 2 is offered to teens that already know how to roll or for Patrollers returning for a second week. River wave surfing, playboating, river running, and rescue skills are the name of the game during this week of the program. Teens will also begin to understand the importance that leadership plays in the outdoors by helping less experienced Patrollers. We will continue to update our log books and the internet blog with video footage from the week.

Level 3: Outdoor Leadership
Level 3 is where Patrollers with advance their skills to an intermediate level. They'll also switch roles from student to mentor and help the adult instructors teach beginners. The older and more experienced of the group will learn the value of patience and the power of positive reinforcement as they help to nurture the development of other paddlers. The primary goal of this week is to help mold Patrollers into future outdoor leaders. Level 3 participants will also learn the finer points of videography and photo editing.
